Thank You Mr NBA | David Stern Dies at 77

January 1st, 2020 was a sad day for the NBA community. Former NBA commissioner died from a brain hemorrhage. Mr. Stern transcended the culture of sports by propelling the NBA into a global phenomenon. On December 12, Mr Stern was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage which required an emergency surgery. A brain hemorrhage is a form of stroke, which can be cause by hypertension, dilated blood vessels, or trauma. Following Mr Stern’s surgery he was on a breathing tube and unconscious. His wife Diane and son Eric were together with their beloved father throughout the process. Mr.Stern has been responsible for opening various doors for the NBA globally and implemented the idea of marketing superstar athletes such as: Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

In 1984 David Stern took over as the NBA’s commissioner at a time when the league was at a crossroad. Several franchises had financial instabilities with no major television deals, thus lack of global reach stifled the league. Ultimately under the guidance of Mr Stern the NBA expanded into the most progressive Sports league in the world. Here are some interesting statistics of the NBA during Mr. Stern’s 30-year tenure. According to Forbes:

1. The NBA player salary cap grew from 3.6 million to 59 million dollars.

2. The NBA television revenue grew from 22 million to 930 million dollars.

3. NBA Franchise value grew from 400 million to 19 billion dollars.

As mentioned earlier David Stern being the visionary that he is capitalize off his strategy of marketing prominent NBA Superstars into global icons. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were larger than life during the 1980s and from a cultural standpoint they both helped bridge the gap between racism in sports. For first time in history NBA players were allowed to participate in the Olympics thanks to Mr. Stern’s blessing. In 1992 The Dream Team were the stars of the show in the Barcelona Olympics capturing a Gold Medal. One can make the argument that this was one of the biggest moments for the NBA, to have a team full of NBA legends representing their respective country and being a global ambassador for the NBA. The brilliance of Mr. Stern will never go unnoticed. It’s safe to say that Mr.Stern surpassed all the expectations sought out for the NBA.

Silver worked alongside Stern as an intern learning the business of the NBA, the two spent countless hours in meetings, on phone calls, on flights. In 2014 Mr Stern decided that it was time to pass the torch to Adam Silver. Mr. Silver continues to guide our league in a positive direction and will forever pay homage to his mentor and cultural Icon Mr.Stern. Homecoming | Melo Is Back

This is the news all sports fans been waiting to hear, Carmelo Anthony will play the remainder of his NBA season with the Portland Trailblazers. Friday afternoon Trailblazer’s President Neil Olshey announced to the media. This opportunity seem like a perfect fit for Melo and his career as he received Western Conference Player of the week honours, averaging 22 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists, not to mention going 3-0. It’s evident that Melo was the missing piece to Portland’s ball club; despite their sluggish start we are starting to see the potential as a contender in the western conference. The Baltimore native spoke about his experiences being away from the game last season and the importance of getting his “Mental Sanity” back. After being exile by the Rockets last season, Melo finished his season as a unsigned free agent. It’s great to see the future hall of fame back on the court.

The transition process hasn’t been much of a challenge for Melo as he accredited that to his personal relationships with All-star guard Damian Lillard and C.J.McCollum. During last season Lillard spoke to the media about his interest on playing with Melo, but management had other plans. This time around there was a greater need for Carmelo, multiple injuries plague the Trailblazers and they needed a player that could contribute to their offense load. Coach Terry Slots spoke highly of Melo prior to acquiring him in early November, Coach Slot encourages Melo to play free and utilize his unique scoring ability to be a threat. Playing with teammates that have genuine respect and admiration for your game can only make your job that much easier on the hardwood.

With his eyes set on “right now”, Melo is very transparent with his vision for the Trailblazers. He intends on finishing the season and playing in the playoffs; in a loaded western conference spots aren’t given, they’re earned. This will not be Melo’s farewell tour, He hopes to find a home here in Rip city as the fans and organization embraced him. Anthony spoke about his level of comfort being in Portland and playing alongside C.J. McCollum and Damian Lillard. They got his back and it shows, during the thanksgiving holiday Damian Lillard Invited Melo over to his home for dinner. The NBA community have shown their gratitude to the Syracuse Alum on his return to the court, last weekend Melo had the chance to face off with his former draft mate and long-time friend LeBron James. Although Melo didn’t win, he reconnected with his basketball fraternity brother. It’s always bigger than basketball! When its all said and done Carmelo Anthony will go down as a hall of famer, joining greats such as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Karl Malone.
