We our going to put our love against the hate that built the system... and we’re going to win

Now let’s tap into the statistics of America’s criminal justice system. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics, 6.6 million individuals are in the U.S. criminal justice system and 4.5 million of those people are on probation or parole. America spends a lucrative amount of money annually on correction; 80 billion dollars to be exact. Currently, America’s incarceration rate is more than 5 times higher than the rest of the world. A contributing factor is that individuals are sentenced to lengthy terms of post incarceration and probation, then trapped in an on-going cycle that targets people in African-American communities. In America It’s no secret that women are being incarcerated at higher rate that males and a shocking 80% of women who go to prison are mothers. We are witnessing the demise of great African-American families because of a broken criminal justice system. It’s about time we stand together to put an end to this problematic situation. REFORM will be responsible for implementing a systemic reform in place so millions of individuals can’t be labelled as a statistic.

Everyone knows someone in this country, whether it’s a family member or a close friend or now even me, who has experienced incarceration, post-incarceration or even per-trial detention.

Unfortunately, Meek Mill fell a victim to the injustices of America’s criminal justice system. In 2017 Meek Mill’s case received national notoriety as it raised issues against sentencing and probation. Meek Mill was sentenced to 2-4 years in jail for a technical probation violation. Meek Mill’s probation has stemmed from a 11-year case that occurred back in 2007. In 2008 Meek Mill was sentenced to 11-23 months in prison with 8 years of probation. Since then, Meek Mil has been arrested on several occasions for minor technical violation. The sentence seems to be pretty unjust under most circumstance, but Judge Brinkley has been biased toward Meek Mill. Judge Brinkley has imposed unjust sentences against Meek Mill depriving him from the right to work and spend time with his family. Several rumours circulated around the courtrooms stating that Judge Brinkley made inappropriate requests to Meek in private, which included a shout-out on a song. Unfortunately, Judge Brinkley denied those allegations. Ultimately, this case was a representative example on how America’s criminal justice system entraps African-Americans every day. Meek Mill’s first-hand experience with the criminal justice system has catapulted him to a power symbol within the Reform movement. His voice has become very influential as he looks to represent a large representation of individuals who’ve been victims of the criminal justice system.

I don’t want you to judge me off the way I look, or the way I may talk, or the way I carry myself. I want you to judge me off my actions!
— Meek Mill

Jay-Z has become an avid spokesman for the prison reform system, his platform has inspired our generation to contribute towards various social issues in America. His ability to influence a large audience of people is immaculate and with him at the forefront of the Reform Alliance we are hopeful in seeing dramatic changes in the criminal justice system. Jay-Z has pushed the conversation forward about biased policing and mass incarceration that have teared down communities, families, and lives. Jay-Z and Meek Mill have committed to decrease the rate of incarceration among African-Americans. The two have developed a admirable bond predicated off loyalty, support, and reliability. Jay-Z was the sole contributor during the #FREEMEEK movement and stressed the importance of fighting for his freedom. Jay-Z has worked alongside Meek Mill during stages of his career and is a fan of his craft. Jay-Z is currently working on a six-part documentary series featuring Meek Mill, which will release August 2019. From the streets of Marcy Projects to GRAMMY award-winner, now Jay-z is running a different race that will empower the people within our communities and across the globe.

For me I’m from Marcy Projects, I’m from Brooklyn and this has been apart of my life. These are communities that we’ve grown up in... So I grew up with these issues.

MLK Day | The Dream Of A King by Hussein Abdullahi

Without a doubt Dr. Martin Luther King is one of the worlds most influential figures of our generation. His great contributions became largely recognized during the Civil rights moments; when African-Americans faced excessive forms of racial inequities. Dr.King became very significant to large African-American communities throughout the southern states. His prophetic messages helped identify the several barriers that African-American’s faced. Dr. King was apart of some iconic moments in African-American history. Some of these events include: The March On Washington, The Bus Boycott, and the infamous “ I Have a Dream Speech”. What made Dr.King’s speech so unique was the way in which, it addressed people from different ethnic backgrounds. This act has contributed to the advancement of African-American history, but also has eliminated some racial barriers in America. Although racism still exists in the world, we have made positive strides as a nation but still have ways to go. This year we will commemorate Dr.King by sharing his legacy with our communities.

In the sports world racial inequalities is still prevalent. Due to the large representation of African-American athlete’s bigots have created a negative view against them. We’ve witness discrimination in the case of NFL star Colin Kaepernick. The former San Francisco 49ers QB took a knee to protest against police brutality. His stance signified the continual racial profiling against African-Americans. In this case the repercussion were severe for Kaepernick as he was suspended without pay. It’s still mind-boggling to know that Kaepernick was punished for taking a stand on what he believes in. In America citizens are entitled to their beliefs and values but unfortunately, African-American also seem to get the backlash when it comes to social justice issues. Of course Colin Kaepernick would love to play in the NFL, but his purpose is more meaningful then his career. I’ve noticed that great world leaders sacrifice their passions for the sake of others and what Colin Kaepernick did was an example of how great leaders make the world a better place. His acts have raised awareness across all societies. We’ve seen athlete’s like LeBron James, Serena Williams, Skylar Diggins, and Carmelo Anthony use their platforms to cultivate social impact for their audience, and with reference to Kaepernick he has signified the importance of social responsibility for all athletes.

Professional leagues like the NBA have supported the great legacy of Dr. King. This year will mark the 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. day celebration. Each year the organizations show their appreciation and honour to the contribution Dr. King has made to this world. The special day schedule will feature a TNT triple-header. NBA legends such as Bernard King, Dominique Wilkins, Vince Carter, and Dikembe Mutombo all aim to represent the advancement of African-American culture and share it with NBA community. Over the years we’ve seen various NBA players speak about Martin Luther King Jr. and his influences on the world, they’ve stressed the importance of his contribution and hope to carry his legacy by counting to inspire those around the world.

It’s inspiring because of what he stood for, equality, freedom, justice. Everyone is the same person, no one is better than others. Whether your Black, White, Hispanic.

Martin Luther King Jr. has paved the way for great American leaders, as well as African-American figures across the globe. Who would of thought that his “ I Have A Dream Speech” would of catapulted into a defining moment for African-American history. Moreover, Dr. King’s mission was bigger than merging two cultures together, he aimed to advocate for freedom by any means necessary. He sacrificed his own life for the lives of others. Unfortunately, consequences for his actions included serving jail time, being attacked, and eventually assassinated at the Lorraine Hotel. Throughout history, we’ve witnessed great world leaders die for believing in equality, justice, and freedom. Martin Luther King legacy continues to inspire courage acts of kindness worldwide, and as an African-Canadian male I feel that it’s my responsibility to educate those who are unaware of Dr. King’s contributions made towards our world. On January 22th, 2019 the world will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. and show their appreciation for his lasting legacy. I hope to see our world leaders pay homage for those who’ve came before us. If I could describe Martin Luther King Jr. three words it would be: powerful, influential, and historical. Dr. King has inspired me to dream big and set great example for the youth to follow. I strive to make positive contributions to my culture and the world one day. May your contributions continue to inspire citizens across the globe and support the great initiatives from our world-class leaders. Since his existence Martin Luther King Jr. showed the world what sheer determination and belief can do for an entire generation. Dr. King is one of the most powerful figures ever to walk this planet and I will continue to share his story will all who aspire to be great leaders.
